Diabetes Care

Diabetes Care

Diabetes is a lifelong condition that doctors currently do not have a cure for. However, it is a very manageable condition and with proper care can be a very minor part of a person’s life.
Diabetes care is based on maintaining healthy blood sugar levels and requires ongoing commitment. People who are caring for a dependent with diabetes need to be alert for any changes in routine or behavior that may indicate an unexpected change in blood sugar levels. There are several parts to proper diabetes care: lifestyle, monitoring and medication.
Lifestyle – diabetes care has some specific dietary requirements to control the level of insulin and avoid problems from high or low blood sugar levels. Everyone with diabetes will have slightly different dietary needs, but everyone with diabetes will need to closely watch their sugar intake, and avoid foods that are high in sugar.
Exercise is also important for people with diabetes. Regular exercise and activity will help control blood sugar levels, and prevent some complications that are common in diabetes.
Monitoring – people with diabetes need to regularly monitor their blood sugar (glucose) levels. People whose diabetes is under control may only need to check blood sugar levels once a day, those who are just getting their diabetes under control may need to check their levels several times a day.
Medication – Many people with diabetes will need to take insulin as part of their routine care. Insulin is a chemical produced by the body to control sugar levels. Some people with diabetes will need to have insulin shots several times a day; others will only take insulin shots if there is an unexpected change in their glucose levels.
Diabetes care is an ongoing process that takes time to adjust to. Many people with diabetes find that establishing a regular routine helps them take proper care of themselves on an ongoing basis. It’s important to work with a doctor or nurse practitioner who is experience with diabetes to develop an individual care plan.
